Sometimes sodium vapor lamps have an aesthetic that just can't be matched by the LEDs they're installing everywhere. I have the creeping suspicion that people are going to eventually have the same nostalgia for the currently failing LED lamps and their funky purple shift.

Here's a scene shot on my new Fuji X-H2 in Morgantown, WV, where I was recently for a long work-travel trip.

can't remember where I saw the yellowscreen re-creation video and the lost magic prism of walt disney studios, but I am doing a terrible job of creating clickbaity suspense over this interesting aspect of image compositing history

my brother was gifted a stinkin' streetlamp a few years back and recently repaired it and attached the darn thing to the back of his garage. so he's just got. a streetlamp in his backyard. for funsies.

Oooh! I've talked about the sodium vapor method before! I think I've even shared that exact video. It's really fascinating how they were able to find a purely physical method that rivals (and arguably surpasses) anything we've been able to achieve with modern technology. Those "green screen" shots in Mary Poppins? They were using a specially made camera and two reels of film so they could overlap the actors onto whatever other footage they needed to by hand.

As for the Star Wars remasters...yeah. It was said before, but it bears repeating. There's a reason that so much effort by fans has been put into removing the CGI again.

Turns out Disney had something for compositing that made the Volume look like trash, 60 years ago. It’s called the sodium vapor process and it uses a prism to split out one single wavelength of light, 589 nanometers, produced by a particular kind of light.

The orange-tinged is characteristic of sodium-vapor streetlamps, which themselves replaced (to great dismay of the streetlamp enthusiast community) the classic green-tinged mercury vapor lamps. Now LED's in their prosaic way are replacing the sodium-vapor lamps because of energy efficiency. Sodium-vapor lamps are a lot better for light pollution, and bright LED streetlamps have been shown to mess with the day-night cycles of wildlife.
